Winter 2025—NYC Report

Writer: Ethan MarcusEthan Marcus

We’ve had an amazing Fall/Winter of activities in the NYC Metropolitan Area! In September, we kicked off the season with the annual Community-Wide Sephardic Selihot Program at the Sephardic Congregation of Fort Lee, led by Rabbi Ilan Acoca. The moving evening of Sephardic Hazzanut brought together over 300 community members to prepare for the High Holidays.

October brought our annual Ziara — a unique Sephardic custom of communal visits to local cemeteries. Led by Rabbi Yosef Azose, we visited our Brotherhood cemeteries in Mount Hebron Queens and Cedar Park in New Jersey. This meaningful tradition continues to connect generations and preserve our heritage. Our Turkish Young families cohort also enjoyed a special Sephardic Sukkot Party, where children engaged in hands-on activities and learned about our Sephardic Sukkot traditions. In November, we hosted an exciting book talk on “A Sephardi Turkish Patriot” with author Anthony G. Bigio in partnership with Kehila Kedosha Janina in Manhattan.

The Sephardic Young Professionals Network has been equally active this season! Highlights included our annual second Young Professionals Rosh Ashana Seder, a Fall Young Professionals Shabbat Dinner, and a community hike in Ramapo, NJ. We closed out the year with a Sephardic Young Professionals Hanukkah Party, with over 100 people joining us for live Greek, Sephardic, and Israeli music, menorah lighting, music, and homemade Sephardic bimuelos.

Looking ahead, our calendar for January through March 2025 is packed with exciting events! Highlights include a Sephardic Frutikas—Tu Bishevat Celebration in February at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, our annual New York Ladino Day at the Center for Jewish History in January, the annual Purim Masquerade Ball in February, and of course our annual Sephardic Purim party.

Stay updated on all our activities at sephardicbrotherhood.com and through La Boz Sefaradi The Sephardic Voice. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!
