On May 5th, Sepharadim of all ages from across the Metro Washington DC Area got together at the DCJCC for a celebration of “Borekas i Biscochos,” the inaugural event of the Brotherhood’s new DC-Maryland-Virginia (DMV) chapter. Brotherhood Central Council member Ian Pomerantz on percussion and vocals and Zvika Shar‘abi on the oud led the group in a range of Ladino musical classics, such as Arvoles, and taught the melodies of lesser-known tunes, such as Gülpembe and Mira Novia.

The group also delighted in a cooking lesson from award-winning Chef and Brotherhood member Susan Barocas, who demonstrated how to bake biscochos and baklava bites, including their history and geographic variations in ingredients. The lesson was nourishing on multiple levels and made for a memorable kickoff for the new chapter, with a delicious Sephardic borekita and kave turko (Turkish coffee) reception. Kome kon gana!
We have some exciting events planned for the Fall, including a Sephardic Community picnic and DC Area Shabbaton in partnership with the Brotherhood’s affiliate Congregation Magen David in Maryland. Located in the DC Area. Make sure to join us for one of our upcoming events soon!
