Even though the heat index may have reached close to 100° F (38°C), we at The Sephardi Federation of Palm Beach County (SFPBC) in South Florida maintained our activities throughout the summer months.
Our film series this season focused on the experience of Sepharadim in America. The following films were shown, followed by discussion and Q&As from the audience: Tijuana Jews; Challah Rising in the Desert (The Jews of New Mexico); To the Ends of the Earth (A Portrait of Jewish San Diego); A long Journey (The Hidden Jews of the Southwest); and People of the Crossing (The Jews of El Paso).
The concerts featured a Sephardic themed classical music piece– “Sephardic Dreams/Suenos de Sefarad” by David Stock. This rare opportunity to hear live performances by an outstanding ensemble of professional musicians was a truly lovely summer evening to spend together.
Two other new initiatives we started recently are Vijitas en Kaza, where federation members get together at a member’s house and join at a planned activity, such as a craft demonstration and participation by the attendees; and Karaoke en Ladino, where we sing songs projected on a large screen television.
Our vice president Bob Altabet was the “musafir” to Bryan Kirschen’s “balabay” on the August 24 edition of the live stream Enkontros de Alhad. They discussed Bob’s background and the activities of the SFPBC.
We also continued with our weekly Viva Ladino instructional language program, also hybrid, headed by our board members Bob Altabet and Dianne Mortensen.
