Our newest Brotherhood chapter has been busy this fall and winter with some exciting programs. Our inaugural DC Ladino Day was a fantastic success! We held a joyful celebration in November of Sephardic language, culture, and community, bringing together more than 100 attendees for an unforgettable day of learning and connection. The program featured engaging presentations on the basics of Ladino, a mouthwatering Sephardic Culinary Journey led by Susan Barocas, and a captivating conversation with author Anthony Gad Bigio about his new book, A Sephardi Turkish Patriot.

The day concluded on a high note with a beautiful concert by Trio Sefardi, followed by a reception filled with delicious Sephardic treats. Special thanks go to DC Brotherhood Chapter leaders, Susan Barocas, and Larry Bensignor, as well as dedicated volunteers Rebecca Galanti and Aaron Shapiro, for their hard work in making the event such a success. Deep appreciation also to our wonderful event partner, the Edlavitch DC JCC, for their continued support and collaboration.
In January, we launched a four week Ladino 101 course for the local chapter co-taught by myself (Eitan Danon) and my colleague Aaron Shapiro. This small group meets every two weeks or so to learn some of the basics of language, vocab, syntax, grammar, and gets a chance to snack on some delicious biscochos courtesy of Susan Barocas. This has been a wonderful way to build community and get to know other Sepharadim in the DC area. Special thank you to Brotherhood member Robert Capon for hosting the program in his lovely home, and if you’re interested in learning more or joining us for future classes, register online at https://www.sephardicbrotherhood.com/event-details/ladino-101.
